Artificial intelligence has created an ongoing race between employers and candidates where both sides are using similar tools to gain an advantage. Employers are implementing AI in recruiting to identify, screen, and communicate with candidates, while job seekers are using AI to tailor resumes, complete applications, and prepare for interviews.

When both sides have access to similar technology, hiring becomes an “AI vs. AI” environment, where more applications are being submitted, but it’s not necessarily easier to determine who is genuinely qualified.

How Employers Use AI to Accelerate Recruiting

AI allows hiring companies to reduce repetitive administrative work and respond faster in a highly competitive tech labor market by:

  • Identifying strong candidates based on skills and experience
  • Screening resumes against job requirements
  • Automating outreach and follow-up communication and
  • Scheduling and, in some cases, performing preliminary interviews

This rapid adoption of AI by hiring companies is expected to grow stronger; according to SHRM, 35% – 45% of companies have adopted AI in their hiring processes, with the AI recruitment sector projected to increase at a 6% compound annual growth rate from 2023 to 2030.

Additionally, AI is yielding 25-75% time savings for HR professionals – emphasizing the immense increase in efficiency and speed that AI brings to many organizations.

Despite the ability to identify and hire candidates much faster, however, AI may struggle to evaluate core qualities such as adaptability, critical thinking, communication, motivation, and long-term potential. These distinctly human attributes often determine whether a candidate can succeed beyond the requirements listed in a job description, and it often requires an experienced recruiter to identify them.

How Candidates Use AI in the Job Search

Competing on the other side of the AI hiring race are the candidates. AI candidate tools have changed the modern job search by helping applicants:

  • Optimize resumes for ATS
  • Match keywords from job descriptions
  • Draft cover letters and application responses
  • Prepare answers for interview questions
  • Automate applications to several different companies

These tools help candidates clearly communicate their skills and experience, while simultaneously maximizing their efficiency during the job search. In fact, according to research conducted by Capterra, when comparing candidates who use AI and those who don’t, the candidates that used AI to assist in their job search completed 41% more job applications, on average. Plus, those who use AI were 53% more likely to receive a job offer.

However, the use of AI candidate tools is met with scrutiny. In one poll, according to U.S. hiring managers, 80% say candidates’ resumes don’t match their real-world skills at least sometimes, with 34% reporting it happens all the time or often. This can indicate that AI has made it far easier for candidates to present highly polished materials that may not accurately reflect their real capabilities – potentially deceiving employers into an unqualified hire.

The Challenge: Efficiency vs. Authenticity

For employers, AI increases efficiency immensely, but it can make genuine expertise much harder to identify. As candidates use similar tools to optimize resumes, tailor applications, and mirror job descriptions, submissions can begin to look increasingly similar, and employers risk being deceived. Combined with the sharp increase in application volume, employers may begin to struggle with increased noise rather than a stronger talent pipeline.

For candidates, access to AI does not guarantee greater visibility. When hundreds of applicants use the same tools to tailor their materials, even highly optimized resumes begin to look alike. Candidates may meet the system’s requirements but still struggle to demonstrate why they are suited for the role.

Humaneness in Hiring

The winner of the AI hiring race will not be determined by which side has the most advanced tools, but rather which side uses those tools alongside the unique human qualities that drive effective hiring.

The candidates that will stand out will demonstrate the qualities that cannot be manufactured through polished language alone, like critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and self-motivation.

Meanwhile employers will need to rely on well-attuned human judgement, specifically by asking targeted follow-up questions, recognizing inconsistencies, evaluating transferable skills, and understanding the difference between a highly curated application and a capable professional – tasks that an experienced recruiter executes every day.

As AI becomes standard across recruiting, technology alone is no longer a differentiator. The differentiator is how people use it. At Prosum, we combine modern recruiting technology with experienced recruiters who know how to ask the right questions, recognize potential beyond a resume, and build meaningful relationships with both clients and candidates. AI helps us move faster, but it’s our human touch that ensures every match is built on more than algorithms.
