Data Center Migration and Consolidation FAQ

Comprehensive Data Gathering

Projects begin with an exhaustive data gathering exercise designed to ensure we completely understand the environments that are to be moved. The outcome of this process is a comprehensive data set of business processes, applications, data, information systems, and users that must be accounted for the in project.

Identification of Critical Business Requirements

We work with you to identify and catalog any critical business drivers that may affect timing, impact business cycles, or create risk factors. We create detailed documentation that captures business drivers and risks that must be accounted for during the timeframe of the move.

Business Process Identification

Prosum’s consultants will work with your subject matter experts to identify the primary processes that interact with your major business systems. Prosum’s consultants create a set of graphical process maps that visually depict how users interact with systems and how process areas interact with each other. This helps predict any conflicts that may impact critical business functions during system downtime.

Identification of Application Interdependencies

One of the most important elements of a successful data center migration is identifying interdependencies between applications and data that may affect when and how different systems can be moved, merged, and decommissioned. Prosum’s analysts will document these dependencies and determine the appropriate change schedule.

Site Survey

Prior to moving any equipment, the Prosum team will perform a comprehensive site survey of the new data center to ensure that power, fire protection, network connectivity, environmental controls, and physical security are all available and appropriately scoped for the new environment. This helps avoid any last-minute crises when hardware arrives and there isn’t sufficient physical infrastructure to support it.

Phased Server Migration

Finally, the project team will be able to move servers, network equipment, storage devices, and data in a series of carefully planned phases. Extensive testing is performed at the end of each phase to ensure that the infrastructure is configured properly and performing as expected. The final outcome of this effort is an efficient information technology infrastructure that is sized and configured appropriately for your organization, running in the new data center facility.

Documentation

A comprehensive set of documentation will be provided by the Prosum team. This documentation will capture both physical and logical configuration data and will allow future support personnel to effectively manage the infrastructure from a remote location without having to be physically collocated at the data center.
